ICC T20 WORLD CUP 2012 

ricket now is mostly about the fascinating short version of the game called T20 cricket. With the T20 World Cup knocking at the door which is to start from the September 18, 2012 in Sri Lanka, the expectations from participating nations from all across the World are humongous. The T20 World Cup schedule has been declared by the ICC which will host 27 matches in the period of September-October this year. There has been much discussion about the Twenty20 World Cup schedule where team managements are in continuous discussion with the ICC to ensure a fair T20 schedule in order to avoid fatigue. The Future Cricket Tour Programs (FTP) is the operational body and developer of the World Twenty20 fixtures for the World Cup this year.

The first match is going to be played between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka on September 18 as the inaugural match of the Cup. Critics have already started the blame game complaining too much of cricket especially Twenty20 cricket is the root for fatigue among players and the T20 World Cup time table should be reviewed in order to save cricket. The 20 odd day long tournament will be concluded with the final match played at the Premdasa Stadium on October 7. The T20 World Cup fixtures include participating nations like Sri Lanka (the host), Zimbabwe, Australia, Ireland, Afghanistan, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh, West Indies, Pakistan and England. Despite the T20 fever of IPL donning the cricket World at present, the T20 World Cup is expected to throw a lot of surprises off the shore.

The ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2012 match schedule is unveiled. The fourth edition of this tournament will be held in Sri Lanka from September 18 to October 7 next year. India has found its place in Group ‘A’ for the 2012 edition of T20 tournament.

ICC World Twenty20 2012 will feature 16 teams; out of which six teams with non-permanent ODI status nations – Kenya, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland and Afganistan – will have to go through a Qualifier round to be played in UAE to be qualified for the grand tournament.

 COLOMBO: A reported theft at Sri Lanka Cricket headquarters, which led to speculation of a security threat to the World Twenty20 Championships in September, never happened with the tournament director insisting that no safety plan was stolen. 

"...there is absolutely no security threat to the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012, as no files were lost as alleged," Tournament DirectorUpekha Nell said in a statement released by the ICC. 

The theft was reported in the media here two weeks ago. The reports claimed that documents belonging to World Twenty20 2012 security consultant Shane Dullewa had been stolen from the board's headquarters. 

But Nell denied any such incident. Nell said "a comprehensive security plan" will be discussed by the organisers for the event, scheduled from September 18 to October 7. 

"The Sri Lankan government and Sri Lanka Cricket have assured the ICC of providing a similar level of security as was available during the 2011 World Cup." 

After the reports of theft, Dullewa was relieved of his position. Dullewa, a former secretary of the Sri Lankan rugby football union, was sacked last month. 

He has appealed to a Colombo District Court against the decision.

The 2012 ICC World Twenty20 will be the fourth ICC World Twenty20 competition, an international Twenty20 cricket tournament that will be held in Sri Lanka in 2012. The schedule has not yet been posted by ICC . This will be the first World Twenty20 tournament held in an Asian country, the last three being held in South Africa, England and the West Indies respectively.The 2012 World Twenty20 will be the fourth edition of the Twenty20 tournament. The first was hosted by South Africa in 2007, where India beat Pakistan to become inaugural World Twenty20 champions. Pakistan, the losing finalists in 2007, defeated Sri Lanka in the 2009 tournament, held in England. England became the third World Twenty20 champions by beating Australia in the West Indies. The 2014 ICC World T20 is to be held in Bangladesh, and the 2016 ICC World T20 is to be held in India.The ICC development committee has expanded the global qualification system for the World Twenty20, to give the Associate and Affiliate members of the governing body a chance to feature in the tournament. The qualification tournament, which was contested by eight teams in February 2010, is set to feature 16 sides when it is held in early 2012 ahead of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, later that year.

Malinga named ICC ambassador for T20 World Cup

New Delhi, June 8 — The International Cricket Council (ICC) Friday unveiled Sri Lanka's star pacer Lasith Malinga as the official ambassador for the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012.

Malinga, who plays for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was selected as the event ambassador in recognition of his skills as a role model both on and off the field of play.

The cricketing icon is renowned and admired for his unique cricketing style and vibrancy and is one of the world's best Twenty20 players.

Haroon Lorgat, ICC chief executive, commenting on the event's new ambassador, said: "It is wonderful to have Lasith Malinga as the tournament ambassador for the ICC World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka. Lasith is a special player and one of the most recognisable cricketers in the world."

"Whenever he runs in to bowl with his distinctive action, there is a thrill in the game. I am sure he will add to the buzz that has already surfaced and crowds will flock to see players like Lasith represent their country in the ICC World Twenty20."

Malinga will be the 'face' of the World Cup T20 Sri Lanka 2012 advertising campaign in the host nation and will promote the event globally.

The Sri Lankan pacer commenting on his new role said, "I am honoured to play a part in the first ICC World Twenty20 tournament to be hosted in Asia. As an ambassador, I hope to take the T20 message to all communities and passionate fans across the world."

"I sincerely thank the ICC for giving Sri Lanka the opportunity to host an event of this magnitude and I invite all cricket fans to show their support and unite in the spirit of the game."

The International Cricket Council has chosen Sri Lanka's star pacer Lasith Malinga as the official event ambassador for the World Twenty20 Championships to be held in the island nation from September 18 to October 7.
